MacArthur's Freehold is a tale of a creeping dystopia interrupted by some people who wouldn't go quietly. In that passage Gordon is referring to the Sonderkommandos of World War II. It's pretty unsettling to read about but many things about wars are. Ignoring them not only doesn't make them not happen again but makes them more likely to reoccur. The USA is in a unique position in having a potential partisan force ten to twenty times the size of the armed forces and more tenacious - should it come to that - than any other guerilla force. I hope it doesn't.

Those seeking the office of mayor in Jonestown are to have a debate on KAIT. They ask people to submit questions. I hope someone asks the obvious one - is Joneboro better than it was four years ago? Is it even not any worse? Hanging his hat on that would be pretty pathetic but I guess the incumbent would say of course it is. Who you gonna believe - me or your lying eyes? Wonder if I should watch it.

Had some more shooting in Jonestown, not on Race Street this time. Dunno right off where Alpine is - lemme check. Off Church, behind that Dollar General. I went in there one time for some reason, don't remember why. Maybe curiosity, I've been about three of four DG stores in my whole life. Only car mentioned was a blue Malibu. Since a lot of cop cars are Dodge Chargers these days there may have been one or two involved, just not driven by perps. You drive a Dodge Charger to commit a crime and then ride to jail in one.

Tuesday didn't bring a lot of crime news. A very sad case in Trumann - I used to wonder how stuff like that happens but not so much now. At least it didn't happen much in small towns. Another formerly cop perv in Pokey.

The guy that got beat up by the cop is suing the city. That should be an automagic settlement if they don't ask for too much. Not the same as a cop smashing his cop car into a citizen and turning her into a permanent cripple. Someone should bring that up at the mayor debate. I sent them a question, maybe I'll submit one about that.

Checking some more into the kid from Memphis that got murdered over by Judsonia. If I can find any recent developments I'll put them in. For now I'll guess it was a pretty quiet weekend.

I would want some prison time for this but a moderately attractive - or at least not visually unpleasant - youngish woman can get off easy. The old Citizen's Bank building downtown has been there a long time. Says here built in 1954 or so. When I was a young man working at a small-town bank and thought I might make it a career I had an interview there. A guy I had worked with at my little bank had gone there and I looked into doing the same. After the interview I decided I didn't want to work there and had already taken another offer before they got around to calling me one way or the other. That was in the days of answering machines and I just didn't call back. About all those old banks are gone and new ones all around.

Firemens union in Jonestown endorsed the mayor for reelection. Makes sense - he's likely to win and if he doesn't the new mayor probably will have better things to do than be mad at the fire department. Doesn't say if the members voted or the bosses made the decision on their own. I'm guessing Copenhaver will win - it's hard to beat the machine and Jonestown isn't feeling much pain just now. Since the challenger most likely to have a shot is also a politician he probably wouldn't improve matters much. Haven't heard if the police union - if they got one - is supporting him.

Jonesbororightnow had an article on LEARNS. No unionized teachers bashing this time, just how it works. Personally I'm agin makin' it mandatory but as long as some of the options are non-commie stuff them as has to send their kids to government schools can see their kids ain't being indoctrinated. If you can homeschool or use a microschool or other private school you can be sure

Thinking about the old bank building downtown it might be a candidate for demolition. Not like the market for tall buildings downtown is growing. I might go watch if they imploded it. They could use some more parking space there.

I'll start worrying about SNAP COLA when somebody starts caring about homeless veterans, retired people getting sub-COLA Social Security bumps, stuff like that. It's not as big a problem in Arkansas yet but some states are dumping so much in to taking care of illegals some of the welfare dependents are getting upset.

I didn't know there was still a pharmacy in Parkin. I barely have the nerve to drive through the edge on 64. I rarely do since the only place to go is Memphis. Going through Earle and Left Memphis is pretty depressing too. No word on the type of car but... why do two guys from Left Memphis drive to Parkin go rob a pharmacy. Don't they have pharmacies in Left Memphis? Maybe they don't have cops in Parkin?

The Memphis TV station that had the trial for the rapper that got killed several years ago taking up most of the page for a while. The trial for the cops that beat the guy to death got just a little piece. The rapper-killer trial is over now and seems the persecution has rested in the killer cops trial. I suppose the defense could be interesting from an academic perspective I suppose.

I probably heard of him when he got killed three years ago. Three years to have a trial? OK, I googled again and it took a few months to round up the perps but still a good two years. Anyway with that over and the killer cops trial maybe wrapping up soon. They only kilt that dude last year but it's a federal case and I guess they can move fast if they want to.

Merrick Gollum was in town the other day. Whether he was invited or just invited himself they didn't say. I bet he's hoping Trump loses - he's a prime candidate for prosecution.

The Coca-Cola company is expanding their Left Memphis facility. They had a big one in Jonestown years ago, it closed soon after the soda tax was imposed. Now they're talking about doing away with it. Now there's a company here that does jail services. That's probably a growing market - wonder if the Craighead dedention center uses their products. Anyway I didn't notice - or had forgot - until I looked a while ago that Left Memphis population declining. For some reason I expected that being close to a big city it wouldn't be losing population. Okey-dokey, see ya in a few.

"The survival instinct, in most people, can override logic, reason and even conscience," Gordon said. "During the Second World War when the Germans were killing Jews in the death camps - in the gas chambers - they had something called the Sonderkommandos. They were Jews temporarily spared for use as labor. They removed the bodies from the gas chambers and moved them to the crematoriums. I once watched an interview with one of the survivors - there were very few because after they had been used for a while they themselves were killed and replaced by new ones. "This man, who was not very old - the film looked old - I suppose it was made not long after the war - described what happened. He said that among the incoming prisoners he sometimes saw people he knew, and would avoid being seen by them because of his shame, knowing what would happen to them and being part of it. "He said he was asked, after the war, by people who knew what he had done, 'why did you do it? why didn't you refuse? why didn't you resist?’ "I could see the pain, on his face. Clearly he was tormented by his guilt. He said that when facing death, it is human nature to do anything, absolutely anything, to stay alive just a little longer. "Which is true. And a strong survival instinct in individuals is obviously essential to the survival of the species. Few people will sacrifice, or even risk, their lives for principle when when that principle is essential to survival." "Taken too far," Jessica said, "it would seem that the survival instinct can become self-defeating.” MacArthur's Freehold (Enak Nomolos - 2021)
